Holidays

Christmas doesn’t arrive until December
Why do we feel the need to start in September?
The season starts earlier every year
The stores are banking on that Christmas cheer
Anxious to get shoppers in the mood
When did Christmas become about presents and food?

Christmas Eve, up until 2AM wrapping
Like a zombie on Christmas, I’d rather be napping
Cooking and prepping for hours on end
With friends and family no time to spend
So tired and cranky when the day does finally arrive
Just let it be over, get through it, survive

It is so easy to forget the real reason
We celebrate and rejoice in this season
There are many things that bring us together
Not just the snow and cold weather

Traditions through the ages have come to be
Rather it was the Christians or the pagans who first gave us our tree
It doesn’t really matter now for me
This season should be about family

I celebrate the birth of a King
But others celebrate different things
So gather together in love and joy
Either for the birth of a baby boy
The turning of the winter season
Oil burning, harvest or another reason

So forgo the shopping and all of the fuss
And have a relaxed and Merry Christmas
(or Chanukah, Kwanza, Solstice, Festivus, Saturnalia, Day of the Cat, Thanksgiving, etc.)

And a Happy New Year too!
